Laura Muir

Week 281 (2 - 8 March 2019)

Laura Muir knew she could not let down the raucous home crowd this week, successfully running her way to a historic double-double gold in the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow.

The 25-year-old followed up her incredible 3,000m success with a dominant display from start to finish in the 1500m on the closing night at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.

The Glasgow University graduate has become the first person to do the double-double, replicating her double gold success from two years ago, when she won both events at the 2017 European Athletes Indoor Championships in Belgrade.

Muir’s win comes just in time for International Women’s Day, celebrating women all over the world and elevating their achievements on social media through the hashtag #BalanceForBetter.

“International Women’s Day is really important as women can see they can go out there and achieve whatever they want to achieve. Just go out there and have fun with your friends and don’t worry about your appearance,” Muir said.

Discussing her sport-life balance, Muir said “I have shown I can deal with that pressure. I can’t really imagine being in a much more high-pressured environment than the last few days, and I have been as cool as a cucumber really.”

After years of training and competing, Muir has learnt her limits.

“I am so experienced now, I know how hard I can push it. I’m at that stage now where I am confident in what I can do.”

And it shows. In the 1500m final, the qualified vet left the rest of the field in her wake on the final two laps to collect her second gold of the Championships, just two days after she set a Championships record in the 3,000m.

Muir’s love for her home town was also a factor in her winning, saying, “I just knew there’s no way I can’t win these medals in front of a home crowd and I’m just so pleased I could do that.”

She now has her sights set on the IAAF World Championships in Doha later this year.

When asked what more she needs to do, Muir said: “To be honest, not much more. I feel it’s there now. It’s just a matter of maintaining, maintaining and making small improvements if I can.”

For her confidence, motivation and speaking about #WomenInSport, Laura Muir is JTA Communicator of the Week on #IWD2019 #BalanceForBetter #BeLouder
